CE 393N Novel Structural Materials

This course is targeted at Civil Engineering M.S. or Ph.D. students specializing in Structural Engineering or Materials. The course introduces several emerging materials in structural engineering, some of which are already in use and some of which are still in development. Students are taught the principles of materials selection and design. For each novel material discussed, students are taught about its properties, how those properties are derived, and its potential applications. Examples of materials discussed are high performance steel, shape memory alloys, metal foams, ultra high performance concrete, calcium aluminate cement concrete, fiber-reinforced polymers, and engineered wood composites.
