This is an elective course for undergraduate Civil and Architectural Engineering majors, generally taken in the third year or later. The course focuses on concrete as a material, going into more depth than the CE 324P course. Students learn about cement manufacturing, hydration, and microstructure and concrete mixture design, placement, properties, and durability. In the laboratory portion of the course, students take field trips and perform laboratory experiments. Field trips in past semesters have included an aggregate quarry and concrete batch plant, construction sites, and LEED-certified buildings with innovative concrete use. Recently, students have have designed and tested concrete mixtures with a maximum recycled content for a recycled concrete competition.
